Manual M3 CSL in estoril blue! as well as my genuine CSL in silver grey I have converted my m3 into a manual csl with every genuine part which has cost more than buying another csl there has been so many hours off work and research to acheive this but I believe this to be the only car with every part and the car weighs a touch lighter than my CSL! I'm sure it won't be everybody's taste but I love estoril blue and I love manual.

But may I ask why did you do that ?
I mean, what is the point of this ?
Surely it would be easier to respray a CSL.

Estoril Blue is a great "M" colour IMHO, having made a bit of a comeback recently with the M135i & M5 TT :smokin:
Your 75% Cecil ;) looks great  and since you have the Full Phat Cecil as well ... pix to verif please :-D ... all is well on the spare CSL parts front .
BTW spotted this Frozen Estoril Blue wrap over SB, German registered Cecil @ the Ring, on the recent Euro trip :)

OP what a hero u got a real M3 CSL and went through the pain staking effort of converting M3 to M3 CSL.

Only thing I don't like is those indicators u got on the Estoril one.

Sometimes I think why didn't u wrap another CSL and convert to manual except would have to butcher it.

True dedication and must have cost £££££££ and taken hours and hours.

I think the indicators as pictured blend far better into the rest of the lights than the OE versions which, to my mind, look more dated than anything else on M3s and always draw my eye. Lights should either disappear or be a feature.

It's all subjective though isn't it? Personally I hate black wheels (looks like someone's stolen your rims and brakes) and don't like carbon kidney grills and side vents.

Totally agree. The only exception being some black wheels are ok as long as they are three piece and have a silver rim to differentiate between the wheel and tyre. But this whole black wheel craze has got totally out of hand - it has become synonymous with 'sporty' like sticking a spoiler on the back of a family car

IMO, you can't beat the standard BMW CSL Wheel in it's original colour finish. I also have a set in Black which I'm considering reverting back to original.
As I bought a set of Black BBS CH's with Cups for the TRIP, just in case I ventured onto a track, they'll no doubt come in at some point!
Must be my feminine side - you can never have too many wheels :gayfight:

+1 never tried this type of box before but just love it on the CSL

My CSL is my 4th SMG, First in a E36 Evo, which occasionally spat out into neutral, and second in my Imola Individual Prototype, that sadly broke after 20K of hard driving and 2 track days.

Then more success in my last E46 M3 Individual, ironically in Estroril Blue. That was a good box, that survived the life of my ownership even though I took it on a quick track day.

The CSL box seems very similar to my standard M3, but having a slightly lighter car and less sound proofing means that you feel and hear the aggressive gear changes when the CSL wants to change in a hurry.

For my the SMG is what makes the car, as I'm not a fan of manually changing gear on a manual gearbox, I prefer to let the car do it, although its a complicated system I do agree, but form me its worth the risk.

somehow i cant like these replica csls, nor these modifications which include some OEM parts, not to mention those poser e46 m3 cars in the US. These are spoiling the reputation of the CSL. i wish there would be a rule to buy parts just specifically for the original car, because i find it shit, to see a normal e46 m3 with a csl trunk. As for this manual csl, its the same thing, spoiling the reputation, the csl has SMG and 2 colours silver and black. thats the end of it.

I think you will find that it is the demand for the CSL parts for our lower ;) E46 M3 brethren that have kept the items in production by BMW in the first place.....:blalalala:

As long as there is a big demand for the parts, then BMW are going to keep producing them and selling them. As soon as the demand dries up, so will production..... :(

IMO this car is an absolute credit to the owner, the level of detail and determination (and financial commitment) should only be appreciated IMO.

Having owned my CSL for over a year now, I find the SMG a bit anodyne on the road - its just not as an involving experience as a manual, but on the track (where the CSL belongs), it just comes into its own.

I think I'd love to be in the position of the OP - manual CSL for the road (manually heel and toeing must be an absolute joy), and the real thing for the track :).

I wonder if BMW actually made a CSL test mule with a manual box?

I have read that Porsche did make a 991 GT3 test mule, with a manual box, but they decided that they preferred PDK.

Just because BMW chose SMG for the CSL, doesn't mean that some of the development team would have preferred a manual box though...there might have been pressure from above to push for the CSL to have SMG, as it was the forefront of their gearbox technology at the time.

But most of us are talking about the different involvement levels (at normal speed limits) on the road compared to the track. I wouldn't have the CSL anything other than SMG for the track (where IMO it adds a level of involvement, as it allows you to concentrate even more on making it just lap fast - it's main remit AFAIAC), but on the road it is a bit boring unless you drive it at licence loosing speeds or are doing big skids (again likely to get you locked up). This is why I put the Supersprint on it - to make it more of an occasion on the road - the cold start up is just ear-bleedingly immense (although I'm not sure my neighbours would agree :hahaha: ) :).

glendog74
01-05-2014, 02:13 PM
Owning both a E46 M3 CSL and a manual gearbox E46 M3 Coupé of the same age, I can categorically state that the manual sucks compared to SMG!

The throw is so long and the manual shift speeds are way off SMG of course - even when I concentrate, lol! Arguably it has more 'driver involvement' but it really is not enjoyable involvement and in fact can be a real chore to change gear at times. I can only imagine how shit and frustrating it would be on track when compared to an SMG car! :banghead:

Perhaps having owned the CSL for 6 years has made me a lazier driver when it comes to gearboxes but I wouldn't consider another manual gearbox in any future car purchases. You only have to look at how many modern cars have modern sequential/DCT/DSG gearboxes fitted nowadays - progress!

Agreed Rob. People go on and on about how shite SMG is and mine has never given a moments trouble. Of all the flappy paddle boxes I've used over the years I actually prefer it. It's one of the few that feels like there's a mechanical process going on.............and it's plenty quick enough changing gears.

The bad rep has no doubt come because people don't know how the use the SMG properly to preserve the clutch and stop it slurring. Yes in full auto mode it's not good but no-one should ever use auto mode.

Mine has done high 70k miles and has had one clutch at 35k miles. It feels as sharp as ever.

Going onto the CSL rep, good luck to the chap. Looks like a lovely car. I like.:smokin:

That could indeed be a plan. Will have to investigate the logistics and what's happening about the place then
