Well lads, it had to happen to someone right.

Come out this morning and loaded the car up with the luggage. Went to start her and nothing.

Everything comes on as normal, dash lights, etc. SMG does its thing, takes it out of hear but when I try to start it, nothing. Just clicks at the ignition, nothing happens under the bonnet.

Tried locking it, unlocking it, opening and closing the bonnet, jump starting it and right now it's on a fast charge but I doubt it's the battery to be honest.

Bloody Saturday too, so the BMW dealers won't be open again until Monday. Fcuking raging, she better start soon.

Any ideas, I need help.

Cheers.

Starter could be goosed. But as stu says, check bonnet switch.

Well, she's away on a recovery truck to BMW in Lecco, Italy. She won't get looked at until Monday though so it's a couple of extra days in Lake Como and missing out on all the tours and stuff I was so looking forward too tomorrow/Monday.

Lads, I could bloody cry.

I tried the bonnet switch, charging the battery, played around with the gearbox a few times, rocked the car in gear, handbrake off, earthing straps.

Only other thing I can think of is salmon relay, would this cause these faults?

Did you take the spare key with you? Could be EWS. Try the other key if you have it with you.

Does the fuel pump prime when ignition is on?

Did you try push starting it? (select 2nd gear, ignition on, roll it down the hill, once over 15miles pull back on the +ve paddle and it will throw it into gear and start the car) Measure the battery voltage - a faulty battery simply won't charge no matter how long you have it plugged in.

That's bad :( If you were more close I would have tested the car by DIS :(
Hope this problem to be solved quite fast !!!

Mate don't worry.

First make sure you have a strong battery. The starter won't badge if the voltage is not there.

1. Try what Tom said with a second key.

2. Check all fuses, including big ones

3. Get a hammer and hit the starter a few times, pretty hard.

You should give me a buz this morning, I would come down to help you :|

If it's the SMG Salmon relay, just pull the one from the engine bay and replace it with the Salmon one that operates the Secondary Air Emission Pump in the glove box - it's the same one - you don't need to run the pump any way :blalalala: - and then be on your merry way.

From my experience in rural france the day after a 600 mile drive it sounds like a starter fault. just hope you get sorted quicker than I did because youll be there another week if not. Warranty with breakdown, at least BMW assist will sort you a car if so.

Good news.

We've all been there (I was stuck in Belfort for three days last year awaiting a brake caliper bolt), gutting at the time but feels good when you eventually pull off again with a fit car !

Probably been asked before but..... can you "bump start" our cars if the starter packs up??? Only I'm off to Ring in August so might take a starter with me as a spare (I work as a parts manager so can "borrow" 1 for a week and return it if not required).

It's a small world isn't it? I was just refuelling at Ed's tankestelle yesterday when Barry pulled in straight from Switzerland, we agreed to go out together so I could see a Csl on the ring at close quarters. :smokin:

Barry's new starter motor has now done a lap of the ring I can report along with his luggage tools and mrs!

Was great to see your car so close to mine mate

Hope you made the ferry in time!

Cheers guys, thanks for everyone's assistance with my car. Especially Roland and Marchino, I don't know how I could have got home with the car without your help.

The Italian dealer got hold of a starter on Wed and had it fitted for me arriving in Lecco at 1700 after a driver from Stuttgart via Munich to get another starter in case the Italian one didn't show up. (So I now have a spare starter for us guys)

Now in Cairnryan awaiting my ferry to the Emerald Isle and I can't wait for a pint of the Red stuff back home (it is red and not black, hold a pint of it up to the light and see)

Thanks again to all, here's a quick photo cause it'd be rude not to.
