Hi there,
Just had a quote from my local BMW dealer, (castle BM in York)
apart from being pleasantly surprised at the labour charge (was expecting my pants to be pulled down on that one) the one thing that did amaze me was the charge they qoute for the oil :hahaha:
Labour was £47 , not so bad, Oil filter was £8 , cheap , microfilter £25 , i dont know on that one, never had one before :119:
then the oil, 7 litres of Castrol Motorsport , £96 + vat :119: :119: How mucking futch !!! £113 for a fluid that is not even the best castrol sell apparently .
So i rang the guys at Opie oils who have always been great supplying the Silkolene Pro S i used on my Evos and they suggested Castrol Edge, which is better than the Motorsport as used by the dealers, and comes in 4 litre bottles , £75 +p&p for 8 litres, which leavves me with a litre for top ups :smokin:
The guy at castle service said they have no problem in using my supplied oil.
Doe anyone else know of a better oil/option please or is the Edge a good option.
Many thanks, Nick

Was removing the old plates today too, but noticed the rear had no fittings to accept the screws for the plate carrier etc.
I have 2 dealers within 10 miles so called up the closest first regarding the issue..
1. Apparently there are 2 types of fittings that show up on their database but the are non specific so you would have to order both sets in person and not over the phone, as they dont stock them at a cost of £5.91
Whats a fiver in the grand scheme of things I thought
Dealer 2. He has some push in fixings that they use to plug the holes to which the carrier can then be screwed into 14p each
Bargain of the day, if they work tomorrow that is!
Always worth phoning around

For a complete change Castrol TWS 10w60 was the original requirement (as per the engine bay stamps & handbook). After that (as it was superceded) Castrol EDGE 10w60 became the requirement. Be careful not to get EDGE SPORT though as it's not the right one.
Just had a look Castrol Edge 10w60!

... although it's not uncommon for dealers' invoices to show something different to what was actually used, due to incorrectly labelled part-codes on their system

Thanks for the replies chaps
Castrol edge it is then :-D
Off at a major tangent......
Is it definately correct that the engine in the CSL is majorly different to that of a standard M3??
Other than the obvious, cams , intake mapping etc, is the actual engine itself built any differently?
What i am getting at is is, ythe csl has to have inspection1 / inspection 2 as part of the routine service schedule, each of which can cost anywhere between £700=£1000 a pop, when i queried why the standard M3 didnt require this level of cost in a service i was told "because its a race engine" and the valve clearances need checking , re shimming etc.
So have BMW built it so differently from a normal M3, a mate had an E46 M3, did over 20,000 miles in it, the most a service ever cost him was £400.
Is it really required or is it a cost born of the assumption that anyone with the money to own a CSL, would not question a different service price plan.
Discuss :hahaha:
Cheers, Nick

I am coming up for an Insp II, and I have been doing some ringing around on prices from the Stealers.
They start at £1250, which seems to be a standard figure for some time now. :wanker:
The best I had found was Malton BMW, in Malton nr York, who quoted me £700, which is nice.
HOWEVER.....................
I have just found a dealer, more local to me who have quoted me £500!!!!!
It looks like the Stealers are feeling the pinch on servicing as well as sales and are slashing their prices to get our buisness. Happy days.

The E46 M3 has the same service schedule as a CSL. Your mate maybe just had an Inspection I, its slightly cheaper than an InspII.
As far as Im aware, the service (what done) is exactly the same.

i would'nt give a bmw dealer a wheel barrow to fix especially at £75 plus vat an hour
some experience from the past,
" well we thought it was the air temp sensor but it was'nt that'll be £200 please"
we think it's the ecu now do you want us to try that?
NO FUCKING THANKS!

The CSL has an extra sheet on the service schedule over a standard M3. I have a copy somewhere, I'll dig it out.
Right, I have found what I have got, but it appears to be the standard Insp II service sheet, which all makes standard reading.
Sorry lads, thought I had more.

yes mate its all pretty straight forward.and if i do it myself i A. know it has been done and B. know it's been done properly
mind you i did get a friend in the trade who has an mot station to do the rear tca bushes so he could swear and cut his knuckles while i point and laugh but then i discovered they were brand new! but it still felt like it had rear wheel steering! limiter kit cured that.

and put it this way i worked in a ford dealer's when i was a kid we had a police contract, everytime we had a customer's cosworth in there would be one of us in that and another teccie in a police car flat out up and down the bypass pretending to be in pursuit blue's and two's and everything thought it was funny as at the time!
kind of put's you off leaving your car anywhere!

I would love to do all the relevant work on mine myself, have not been to a dealers for many years, as the concept of paying someone to do half a job, and dent/scratch my car or if i am really lucky both. and still be charged for the ensuing stress and hassle put me off years ago.
As i have found out though , with this type of car , history is everything come resale time, so i feel obliged to pay through the nose once again for the stress involved with letting someone else loose on my car , for simple or more complex jobs.
I would like to think the level of service would be better at aBMW dealer ,and the techs are more clued up and have some pride in their work, hope i am not proven wrong on this one.
Dave, are you not concerned about the service history on your car lapsing ??

you must be kidding bmw are the worst i have come across there so called teccie's swap parts to try and fix a fault when it does,nt fix it you get sorry mate special order you have to pay for that!!!
it makes me laugh people put so much store by fsh and these,s day's that means 10 or 20k in between services's and they dont change half of it
im not selling my car so not worried about fsh i just keep all the bills ie so many ltrs of 10/60 every 5k plus whatever else i buy
if i had to pay £700 for a service or £500 for an alternator id be ill for a week :bigcry:

Dave your dealers are cheap, my local one is £120ph + Vat :smt063
Think i will probably use BM sport as my inspection II is due in 6k :-D

:119: anyone paying that want's there head read
id rather see a bmsport thorney or simpson stamp anyday over a bmw dealers :blalalala:
If your car has BMW Warrenty and had a service at one of the above does the warrenty then become a bit hard to claim on?

Most BMW dealers are doing lower rates for older M cars......Cotswolds and Dick Lovett do Inspection 11 for under £800, rather then the £1200 that alot charged a year or to ago.
I paid £750 for insoection11 at Cotswolds last year but as I do aroung 5k a year in real terms it has cost me about £350 a year so I think thats pretty good for the sort of performance car the CSL is.

warranty wise surely these days you can have the car serviced anywhere as long as it is to bmw schedule and using genuine parts
though granted if you have warranty it would be easier to use bmw
bryce
24-01-2009, 03:15 PM
^ Daves right, as long as genuine parts a nd schedule are used, your warranty stay intact.
Thats good to know as not sure if i want to use my BMW dealer or not! But if anything does go wrong its got to go there any way! :wanker:

It's advertised on BM Sports site that warranty is not affected, I only ever had one service completed by Mitsubishi in 4yr of Evo ownership..
RG saved us a few quid coupled with piece of mind that the job was done properly :-D
If the local dealers can match to a similar price then fair enough they may get my business :smokin:
