I don't know if this is operator error or the car... i read the SMG manual and it says just move the gearlever so it shows 'A.' Now, sometimes if i do this from a standstill it will change from 1st -> 2nd by itself, but from then on it doesn't do anything...
Should i be doing something else or is something amiss? I remember reading about pulling both paddles for something once and tried that, but it didn't do anything :119:

In auto if the gear change is set to its lowest it will pick away in 2 gear

Once its in Auto mode, you don't need to do anything else, it changes gears up and down just like a standard auto.
As soon as you touch either paddle, or move the leaver, this will instantly take it back into manual mode though.

I didn't know this. Why?

I would imagine that when you have the gear change in the slowest speed, that the only resaon why you would do that was because of slippery road conditions (a slower gear change would decrease the chance of jolting the transmission = less chance of breaking traction) - in which case you would want to set off in 2nd rather than 1st

Yes, S1 is for snow and similar conditions...
I thought maybe it was my interferring, but i've put the car in 'S', then back to 'A' but it still doesn't change gear...

Mine does that too. If your meaning while at standstill and flicking between the two?
I think unless your in S4+, it'll try move off in 2nd (in Drive)

I don't know if this is operator error or the car... i read the SMG manual and it says just move the gearlever so it shows 'A.'
If you do that then it's not in Auto Mode - it's in Seq Mode. In Auto Mode it displays 'S'.
It isn't telling you what mode you're in, it's telling you what mode you can select.

What does 'S' stand for? I thought it stood for Sporty!
So in that case putting in 'S' should be automatic mode? Even so, still think there is something up as when i switch from neutrol to drive its always going from S to A many times in a journey and yet - as described - only changes up one gear (1st to 2nd) :banghead:

So automatic mode isnt working, is that what you mean?
ie. it will go 1st to 2nd, but wont go 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th etc. (as an auto gear should do all by itself?)

What does 'S' stand for?
'Sequential'!

I thought when auto mode was selected it displayed a "D" next to the gear number display, then tap the gear stick to the right once more to engage, manual. :119:

Move the gear lever to the right, so that 'A' is shown at the bottom of the display, and 's' is shown to the right.
That shows you are in 'A'uto mode, and if you move the gear lever to the right you will put in 'S'equental (manual) mode.

My car shows 'D' when in auto.
IIRC:
earlier CSL's show 'R' reverse, 'O' neutral and 'A' auto/drive
later models (or software updated) show 'R' reverse, 'N' neutral and 'D' auto/drive.

That'll be mine!!!
Never knew there was a change. Everyday's a school day!!!
Mine will be having an Insp II soon, and I will be geting all the latest software done so I wonder if it will change to R/N/D??

It won't.
I've got the original display too - I've got the latest software and a new SMG ECU - makes no difference to what it shows.

That was a dashboard revision in Sep 03 - they changed the A to a D and the 0 to an N
edit: must read threads more carefully as Brycey already posted this :-D

Mine is an Aug 03 car so I just missed that one. Not that I'm bothered to be honest, but always nice to learn something new!

You'd need a new display in the dash for that.
The elements in the gear display LCD on mine are in the following pattern:
_
| |
_
|\|
_
If that makes any sense? It couldn't display an N ever.
Also the A & D thing is hard coded to the dash display too - have a look at the little lcd display elements in the SMG lever section of the display - hardcoded to say A or D depending on version.

^ Makes sense, thanks.
So when Engleberts in 'A' he is in automatic, and it should change up through the gears itself.
Obviously got a problem somewhere.

There are 2 places it can show the A - in the SMG lever display that shows what mode will be selected if you move the lever over to the right will show S if you are in auto and A if you are in sequential, in addition there is a little A that shows to the bottom right of the gear number if you are in auto.
