Sounds like headunit is just faulty. They can get warm and shut off.

The headunit can be switched on without key in ignition as it has a permanent feed.
Either a wiring issue or faulty unit.

But thinking about it, I reckon it could have had an aftermarket head unit fitted, and someone may have swapped the permanent and ignition feed around.

Does the unit turn on automatically with ignition.

no you have to turn it on it wont come on just by ignition and you have to turn it of ,i will have to get it out fit my old buisness cassett player and see if it also goes off after 20 minutes

It is possibly dry solder joints that may need another dab of solder on the radio unit or something more technical within. I got a replacement unit on my e39 a few years ago as it would not switch off.

I had a weird issue where the heater controls just wouldn't turn off - i noticed you mentioned yours won't turn off - for me I just disconnected the battery for a few minutes and it's been fine ever since - might be worth a shot.

Remove the headunit and check the permanent and ignition feeds. Usually red and yellow. If they have been swapped, for when installing an aftermarket radio, then this will be the cause. It should be obvious to spot one head unit is out.

Does it keep time, and radio stations?
